About Gavin

Gavin was born in Southern California in the Summer of 2013. He has been fortunate enough to have had many experiences in his short life, none of which have taken such a strong hold as racing and cars in general. Nearly every toy he has either is a car, is used with cars, or can be turned into a car (often times using some imagination), and most of the games he plays and movies he watches revolve around cars and/or racing of some sort.

Before he could walk one of his favorite activities was to cruise around on a remote-controlled ride-on Mercedes that mom or dad would control until he learned he could steer it on his own and eventually discovered the throttle pedal. By the time he was 3 he graduated to a green PowerWheels Jeep. He would tear through wheels with drifting and doing burnouts but learned how to accurately control each maneuver to always put the car where he wanted it.

Feeling comfortable with Gavin’s abilities and, more importantly, his
maturity at such a young age, his dad acquired an old hand-me-down go-kart from a coworker: a TopKart Kid Kart equipped with a Comer C50.

At age 4 he was too small to reach the pedals so with some modifications and
seat relocation he was able to fully manipulate all controls. The next year was spent regularly driving around a quiet area of the local municipal airport during off-hours, initially just driving big ovals, doing donuts, and drifting, but eventually began working on cornering techniques using cones and lead-follow with dad on a dirt bike. As he approached age 5 he was showing a great deal of control and speed, eventually leading dad to abandon the lead-follow sessions since he could barely keep up in the corners anymore.

For his 5th birthday Gavin received a new Tony Kart Micro with the Honda
GXH50, built to comply with the class rules of the local karting club, LAKC
(Los Angeles Karting Championship). When it was time to pick a number he decided on 44 because he wanted to be like his favorite Formula 1 driver, Lewis Hamilton. After a couple months of practicing with his new kart at CalSpeed Karting Center at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, CA he was ready for the next step.
